[5.08.01 tuesday] Wow, this weekend was quite a doozy. So much stuff happened in such a short time. I felt really anxious about the time frame of everything on Friday night, but it all worked out well, and for some reason, I feel more refreshed now then I did going into the weekend. So yeah, three pretty big things happened this weekend: Regionals - my last frisbee tournament ever as a Squid, Avery and Sam Lau came down to visit, and then my senior project on Saturday. Whew. (Oh yeah, Harvest also had a retreat) Regionals: I just played my last college tournament ever. Regionals here in San Diego. Well, we didn't make it to nationals. We were three points away from going to Boston. So close. It's pretty funny because that's the story of our team. So close. We've been the best team to not go to nationals for the past 4 years: 97 (with the #1 and #2 team in the nation in our region (stanford and santa barbara), 98 (#1 Santa Barbara and #3 Colorado in our region), 99 (SB and Colorado going 1 and 2), and this year, sb and colorado... again. We're legit man, we'd probably beat more than half of the teams that will be in Boston this May. Oh well. I think whats even crazier is that the 1997 - 1998 team was probably our best team ever. But, as I said earlier, Santa Barbara and Stanford probably had their best teams ever. (That Santa Barbara team as argued to be the best team ever in college ultimate) I think it's funny that we're known as "the perennial bridesmaid" because it's pretty true. That's what's great about college ultimate: it's so fun. Every year, our team would come back hungrier than ever to make it to nationals. Guys would talk about it all the time, practicing, throwing together, running. I never would have imagined that playing for UCSD would be so enjoyable, from traveling up and down the west coast for tourneys, practicing with the guys, and messing around in general. I've got a lot of stories and memories that maybe i'll write about, but yeah, it's been good. Alumni day (our season ending banquet / picnic / party ) is coming up, so that'll be a nice final going away thing. Another finished chapter. Avery and Sam Yeah, it was fun this weekend. Avery and Sam made a Southern Cal trip and they stayed over at my place from Friday night to Monday morning. I had my games during the day, so they watched me play on Saturday, and then we just hung out afterwards on Saturday and Sunday. It was good ... I haven't seen either Avery or Sam since winter break, so we just got to mess around. I think out of all of our times together, I enjoyed talking to Avery in the car as we went to get extra firewood for the bonfire. We just don't really talk much about stuff, and it was good to share about how things were going for each of us, and I think I learned that we are more similar than we believe each other to be. Funny what happens when you get honest with someone. As for Sam, it was just good to hang out with him. I don't know, it was just fun. I don't feel like I have to be anyone but myself with him, and it just reminded me of the good old times when we'd hang out in high school and stuff. It's good to see that those two haven't changed too much over the years. Avery and Sam both still go off the wall (or off the ceilling) with their crazy jokes or statements , and it gets pretty hillarious sometimes. It's funny how the girls react too. It's either: "eeeew! gross!!!", laughter, or silence (which I think is the funniest). I think they've both been pretty darn steady too. As crazy, funny, and weird as they might be at times, there's always something dependable about them, and it was good to see that. I kinda wish the weekend could've lasted longer. Senior Project Well, this Saturday I had my second session for my senior project. It was pretty fun. A little less hectic then the week before. I got a bunch of help from Tofu, so that was really cool. I think it was kinda weird because the session conflicted a bit with my ultimate tournament, and all I could think about was playing. I got to talk with a bunch of them, and it was fun to have them talk about how the food was horrible, how they wanted to become doctors, physicists, etc., and also how they were gonna start taking classes at UCSD. Neat stuff. I'll write more about it in the project journal for the project. I'm thankful. Thankful to God for giving me a really fun, eventful, uplifting and refreshing weekend. I thought I was going to be burned out from all the activity, but it turned out to be the opposite. I feel recharged and ready. Yeah. ___________________________________________ | previous | journal (i need a good name) | next | |
